Important Conversations

I'm "storing" these two videos here for my kids. We all watched them together tonight. We're going to watch them again. Afterwards my daughter said, "OK, Daddy, what was that about?" Here are the videos, and my answers ...

"OK, Daddy, what was that about?"

You have to be really careful about the people and things you see in magazines, on TV and on all kinds of ads. Any picture, video or sound can be edited by anyone. Those pictures look like they are real people ... many of them aren't. Many of the "fancy girls" you see don't really look like that. Who you are on the inside will always be far more important than what you look like on the outside.

"OK, Daddy, what was that about?"

There's a lot to learn. If you want to do cool stuff, like fly a plane, then you have to learn some hard stuff, like physics. And the hard stuff, like math, it's about a lot more than numbers. Learn everything that you can from everyone you can because it's all connected, even if you don't see all the connections right now. If you never learn it you'll never have a chance to put the pieces together.

What would you tell your kids?

  1. Darren, those were two incredibly powerful videos and I am going to follow your lead and share them with my children. These are extremely important conversations for us to be having with our children; it is our job as educators to facilitate knowledge acquisition in young people and the second video and your approach to it does exactly that! Teach how everything is connected.

    Thank You!!!!!!

  2. I second what Maria said. I've been aware of the model video for a while and think it may be one of the best examples of why we need to keep these social networking sites available to our students that there is. Secondly, I love the second video if only because of the clip of Ali! (it's not the only reason, but it is a great one!)Thanks, again!
